The SA8001 is a great SACD and CD player. Not perfect, but only because it is missing a feature or two and the disk loading tray is not as smooth and quiet as it might be. The main omission is of multi-channel outputs for SACD. Those can be a turn-off to audiophiles, which may be the reason Marantz did not include them. That is a shame but then again Marantz may have not wanted to compromise those outputs compared to the two channel outputs. You see, this player is very rare in that it has line outputs that are composed of all discrete components, and uses no opamps. To do that for a 5.1 output player would have increased the cost significantly. Most high-end SACD/CD players at this price and even at five figure prices use opamp based output stages! This player is not about compromise in sound quality and although other SACD players I've seen use cheaper opamps in the center, surround, and subwoofer outputs, Marantz chose not to. Overall I believe Marantz made the correct choice. I've used 10 meter long cables on the outputs of this player and they are driven great with no loss I can discern whatsoever. If you are looking for TRUE high-end sound you will find it in this player, and at the reduced price here, it is a bargain.
