As well as handling native 1080p and upscaled 1080i video, HDMI 1.3a can also carry the HD audio of DTS-HD Master Audio™ and Dolby® TrueHD. The HT-RC160 even includes Dolby’s latest technology, Dolby®

Pro Logic® IIz, which adds “front height” channels to bring a spacious new vertical dimension to the sound stage. Along with intelligent Audyssey equalization and Faroudja de-interlacing technologies, the HT-RC160 gives you a ton of connectivity options, so you can incorporate HD Radio™, iPod®, and more.

I made the right decision

I purchased the Onkyo HT-RC160 to replace my 2-year old Panasonic Elite that did not survive a lightning strike to my house. My primary intent was to upgrade to a receiver with multiple HDMI inputs. Features must include pass-through HDMI, configurable digital optical & coaxial inputs, reasonable power output per channel, and upscaling of any older devices. Since my Insurance company only reimbursed me a fraction of the actual cost for my Elite, I was working on a budget.

I had my finalists narrowed down to the Onkyo HT-RC160, the Sony STR-DN1000, and the Marantz SR5002. I don't have time for a line item comparison (possibly in a future review), but I am completely satisfied - no, completely blown away - with my decision to purchase the Onkyo because the results has far surpassed my expectations. I can't believe how much better - cleaner, crisper, fuller - every sound from every source (satellite HD, Blu-Ray, music CD, radio) is compared to the Pioneer Elite. What an amazing piece of engineering mastery. Maybe it's the Audyssey systems that is so superior to the Pioneer's automatic configuration and setup, I'm not sure, but there's a world of difference in how the speakers are now "tuned".

And I shouldn't forget to mention how pleased I am with the programmable remote. It was simple to add my satellite receiver, Mitsubishi HDTV, Panasonic Blu-Ray player and JVC VCR/DVD player.

I'm glad it had gotten cold this weekend as it gives me an excuse to stay inside and watch some movies I've been neglecting to see - maybe even some CDs I haven't listened to in awhile. Good times!
