Great value with very surprising sound 
I am powering them bi-amped using one of the slim Marantz receivers (1608 I believe). These speakers sound very clear, and I have to admit, sound surprisingly good. I expected them to be too bright, given the hardwood room and no setup on my equalizer yet. But, even without the adjustments, these sound very balanced and neutral to warm.
I have LSiM707's for my basement setup, and for the money, I would recommend the signature series over the LSiM's to most folks. The S55's also are a good compromise of sound quality and size. Some of Polk's more expensive speakers are ridiculous in size.
The S55's are in a very large living room, with the complementary compact signature center and S10 surrounds... all work together well. I feel like to save in production costs, the finish was compromised more than the sound. That said, these still look very good, but it seems the sound was Polk's focus.
As far as bass goes, the sound was pretty solid before I added my sub. The woofers are capable of handling down pretty low. Obviously, there's no substitute for a sub; FYI, I added a SVS SB1000 'open box' from their own site to my ensemble. For around $1600 including all components and receiver (bought new here), it's a solid system that a majority of folks would be blown away by.
